2018 January Commodore’s Column “Prepare to come about!….Helm’s alee!”

As PTYC moves into another year, let us think about the things that make PTYC such a neat place. We have a beautiful location on the working waterfront, with a panoramic view of Port Townsend Bay and Indian/Marrowstone Island. We own our facility and have secured a long-term lease with a favorable rate. We are diligently working to maintain our asset to the best of our abilities. Our club’s membership has grown steadily for the past several years and hopefully, will continue to attract new, interesting folks to our fold.

One area where we can improve is member participation in club activities, duties and cruises. I am a firm believer that what you receive from a person, place or thing, is equal to what you contribute. Let’s all pull together to keep moving toward our goals.

On January 27th we will be having our annual Planning Meeting for all of 2018. I would encourage all who are interested in the continued success of PTYC to attend this meeting. At our 2018 Planning Meeting, we will be discussing cruises and events both from past years and proposing, perhaps, new events and cruises that individuals may want to put on. This meeting will be a perfect time to offer the most precious resource we have as members of PTYC…our time.

Perhaps you are a newer member and you feel that you would be overwhelmed with the responsibility of a cruise or an event at the club. I get it. Mary and I felt that way when we were beginning in PTYC. Everyone does. The best way to combat those feelings of doubt is the proverbial “leap of faith” that if one tries to lead an event, things will work out (believe me the club will be most appreciative) or the safer method which is to assist with a more experienced member on a cruise or an event. It is interesting to note that events and cruises that are memorable here at PTYC are most always “team efforts”, with a group of two, three or even four couples pulling the weight.

  •  Volunteer for a monthly Watch.
  • Grab a broom to help clean up after a meeting.
  • Attend our twice yearly “Work Parties.”
  • Sponsor a cruise or event or Co-sponsor an event or cruise.
  • Join a committee, such as Scholarship or Membership or Fairwinds.

I remember Pres. John Kennedy’s inaugural address with the famous line, “Ask not what your country can do for you…ask what you can do for your country.” I would take that thought and apply it to PTYC.. The opportunities to help are myriad. Remember PTYC succeeds when its members develop the camaraderie of a team. We are in this together. Let’s make 2018 a year to remember.                                                                        Commodore Jess Schefstrom
