Don’t Be THAT Guy – How to Not Need to Be Rescued

Salish Rescue receives several hundred calls a year, usually directly from USCG or local law enforcement. Most of these rescues are situations that could have been avoided with better planning, better training, better maintenance, and better safety equipment. This talk covers how to NOT end up meeting us on a dark and stormy night, including tips on how to “rescue-proof” your boat and your personal safety gear, and how to mobilize help quickly when you need it.

Stone (VHF call sign "Driftwood") has been a Salish Rescue First Responder since 2020. In that time he’s assisted dozens of boaters, including several spectacular rescues during the start of the 2022 Race to Alaska. Stone has spearheaded Salish’s efforts on derelict vessel *prevention* for the past few years, doing active outreach to liveaboards, particularly newbies who are often in way over their heads when winter storms arrive. The easiest and cheapest way to mitigate impact for beached/sunk vessels is to prevent them from going on the beach in the first place!
