2021 June Commodore Column: “The Good Old Summer Time!”

We’re off to a great start with Summer 2021 Club Cruising.   The Shakedown Cruise to Kingston and Port Ludlow was tons of fun.  New members added to the camaraderie and we had a few club land-cruisers stop by to join in.  Our last evening was spent around a roaring campfire, sipping libations, and playing a game of stacking giant Jenga blocks (with somewhat unsteady hands).  Many thanks to Jim & Susie Gorski and Steve & Maggie Smith for co-captaining the first club cruise of the season.

The Seattle Bell Harbor Cruise showed promising signs of life in the city and times before the pandemic.  We did find some storefronts boarded up, but restaurants are reopening with outside dining and limited indoor seating, and the Pike Street Public Market was alive and well.  New members Robert & Gail Chanpong were our cruise captains and deserve a big thank you!  It was nice to have free time to explore, shop and relax, and then socialize around an afternoon glass of wine before heading out to dine, or preparing a meal aboard our own boats.

Our next club cruise, June 28 – July 1st, is to Echo Bay at Sucia Island where Cruise Captains Tim & Alice Tibbals (with Bob and I as co-captains) are planning a rousing game of dinghy volleyball, along with some dinghy (or is it dingy?!) happy hours!  Of course there is so much to explore on Sucia Island, and if you have kayaks, be sure to bring them.

As long as you’re already at Sucia Island, continue on to our annual Reid Harbor Fourth of July celebration at Stuart Island (July 2 – 5).  Yours truly is captaining this cruise, with Co-Captains Duane & Houlton Madinger.  Our famous dinghy parade will happen once again, so be sure to bring July 4th decorations to adorn your dinghy and yourself. Prizes will be awarded!

Find more details about our Echo Bay and Reid Harbor Cruises, as well as the Anacortes,  Pleasant Harbor and Sequim cruises, on our website and Baggywrinkle Newsletter,

Back by popular demand, I’ll end my column with a recipe.  This Waffle Cookie recipe was requested by many at the Opening Day gathering at Port Hadlock.

Happy Summer Cruising!
