Alan Scott will talk about the history and discovery of the world's richest shipwreck, which is the focus of the book titled "Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea" by Gary Kinder. Over 400 lives and 21 tons of gold were lost in 1857 when tragedy struck the SS Central America. In the 1980's, Tommy Thompson and the Columbus Discovery Group mastered a method to explore the deep ocean floor. In 1989, they sailed into Norfolk with discovered treasures of gold coins, bars and nuggets, along with steamer trunks of period attire, newspapers and journals. LIFE magazine called it the "greatest treasure ever found". Alan will explain his involvement in the discovery and more about this fascinating find. 100% of the proceeds benefit the PTYC Fund for Marine Trades & Sciences.
