About this event

Explore the South Puget Sound with us. There’s good reason that South Puget Sound is home to over a dozen state-managed marine parks. The area is a labyrinth of protected inlets, calm waters, and a significantly more peaceful, rural atmosphere compared to the bustling Central and North Sound. Its waters are generally protected from heavy winds, often “feeling more like a lake than a sound”. The warm water inlets are a treat to explore so be sure to bring your BBQ, swimsuit, kayak, SUP, and even scuba equipment.

South Puget Sound islands! Islands under consideration are Fair Harbor Marina (see rotating reviews low on that page), Longbranch, Jarrell Cove State Park, Joemma Beach State Park, and Penrose Point State Park. These islands offer docks, scenic hiking trails, abundant land and marine wildlife viewing, beaches & other gathering areas, and dramatic views of Mount Rainier. There will be opportunities to explore beautiful, long inlets and visit the sweet town of Allyn by kayak or dinghy for the “best burger ever”.  These islands are in the WA Marine Area 13 which allows salmon fishing year-round and has “some of the best Coastal Cutthroat Trout fishing in the Puget Sound”. There may also be crabbing, and clamming.

Olympia! Swantown Marina, a “first-class marina”, is in one of Olympia’s three waterfront parks which offer miles of waterfront walks and trails, and a 3600 observation tower. Within walking distance is one of WA’s largest farmers markets, the Puget Sound Estuarium, Olympia Arts & Heritage Museum, a 30-block Historic & Creative District, several "expert" guided tours including WA's Capitol & grounds, and much more.

Tacoma! We plan to stay at the “first-class” Dock Street Marina. It is located “in the thick of Tacoma’s revitalized downtown and is a superb entry into Tacoma’s noted arts and museum district (glass, auto, maritime heritage, & more), numerous excellent dining choices (including a PTYC Mexican fav.), an active nightlife, and delightful shopping.”

A meeting of those interested in this fun trip will be held to gain input on our exact route. There will be plenty of support for crews with less experience. Our longest day will be Boat Haven to Brownsville (~37 nm). Other travel days are expected to be 7-25 nm. Before heading to the islands, we plan to stop in Gig Harbor for provisioning. After the islands, we expect 2 nights each in Olympia, Tacoma, and Bell Harbor where we may catch the afternoon Mariners vs Cubs game on 8/23! Not going to the game? Your cruise co-captains have several ideas for interesting alternative routes home.
