Commodore Column: Boating on the Water!

Eileen Baratuci, Commodore | Published on 8/28/2024

It was a wonderful summer cruising season, with pleasant weather, time with friends from the club, and a chance to enjoy some of our favorite boating destinations.

We had fun cruising on Galatea this summer, after the initial issues were resolved. Although we did not purchase a new boat just for our dog Luna, who was extremely anxious about cruising in Sea Bee, we are happy to report she did much better on the new boat. She did jump off the bow one time when we were getting ready to leave Rosario, so she is still a little anxious, but she and Aquila loved the beaches, being with our friends, riding in the dingy and just getting outdoors. They were happy and exhausted dogs!

Unfortunately, a few members were burdened with boat repairs, illness, or home repairs, which impacted their cruising plans. We were sorry to miss those of you who planned to join us but were unable to. Cruising together simplifies your planning, keeps us connected and is a key step for newer members to deepen friendships, or just have fun doing what we all enjoy doing-being out on the water!

We enjoyed clear weather and each other’s company at Reid Harbor, in the Gulf Islands and at the Anacortes Arts Festival. We had several members join us in Anacortes by car, which is an option for those without a boat, still searching for the right boat, or if your boat fails to cooperate with your plans for a scheduled cruise.

We have two more cruises this season, the South Sound Cruise, and the December Cruise to Bell Harbor. If you missed going on one of the summer cruises, please consider joining us for the last two cruises in 2024, or drive to one of the city destinations and join us for dinner!

Our big events for September include:

  • Our monthly meeting and Soup and Salad Potluck on September 3rd at the Clubhouse with Speaker Chip Hanauer. (See Page 5)
  • Then stop by our first ever booth at the Wooden Boat Show (Sept. 5-7).
  • We have a Boating Experience workshop from 10 AM to Noon on Sept. 21st.
  • Don’t forget the cruise planning meeting scheduled for September 28th from 1 to 3 pm and ensure you get a chance to help shape our next cruising season.

Thanks to everyone who has worked so hard on each of these events to make them such a success. Please check out our website and calendar for more details.

Our presence at the Wooden Boat Show, the largest gathering of boating enthusiasts in our vicinity, will help the public better understand what we do for our community, our scholarship program, our educational seminars, and our club activities. If we encourage new members to join our club in the process, that will round out the objectives the board identified when we agreed to participate in the festival. Thanks to all the volunteers who have signed up to make sure this endeavor is a success.

Don’t forget the Garage Sale in October. We are already in the process of collecting donations! This has always been a great fundraiser for our scholarship funds.
